EFP to Retire Pottery EFP creates its art pottery vases in limited quantities. The maximum number created will vary from piece to piece, but will never exceed 500. This enhances the collectibility and long-term value of our pottery. We will retire some of our vases later this year. The pieces to be retired, how many have been made, and the last date orders can be placed will be announced on our web site and in a mailing. Advance notice will be given so that our customers have a chance to place their orders. Look for more information in the next issue of News From Ephraim. Down on the Farm For Kevin Hicks and Scott Draves, two self-described "farm boys who like to play with dirt," becoming potters was a natural choice. And what better place to locate their company than on a farm? EFP is housed in a converted barn in rural Deerfield, Wisconsin. Kevin and Scott are joined each day by Kristin Zanetti, a city girl who is often amazed by the sights and scents of farm country. We will share observations on our rural surroundings with our readers in Down on the Farm, a regular column that begins with this issue. Spring is finally beginning to arrive in southern Wisconsin. A pale green veil of new leaves drapes the treetops and hedgerows. Robins and red-winged blackbirds have been frantically engaged in nest building for the past month. The west wind wafts the birds' songs over the glacial drumlin and through the prairie grasses. It's time to start thinking about putting in the garden! Applause for EFP's Vases Ephraim Faience Pottery created 50 original vases to decorate the dining room at a gala honoring Bruce Johnson, recipient of the Craftsman Farms Foundation's 1999 "Als ik Kan" award. The gala was held February 18 at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina, just prior to the start of the annual Arts and Crafts Conference. Johnson is the founder and organizer of the conference. Tom McPherson, President of Craftsman Farms, approached Scott Draves and Kevin Hicks last fall about the possibility of creating original art pottery for the gala. "It was great to be able to contribute to the award ceremony," said Draves. Added Hicks, "Both Bruce Johnson and Tom McPherson have done so much for contemporary craftsmen through their work. We were glad to be able to do something for them in return." EFP's contribution received hearty applause. One lucky person at each table got to take home one of the vases, which were filled with striking and unusual flowers. By a strange twist of fate, Hicks won the vase at his table. He presented the vase to Johnson as a remembrance of the evening. Help us out! We'd like to make sure that our mailing list is as up-to-date as possible. If you know someone who likes Arts and Crafts pottery and doesn't know about EFP, please give us their name and address and we will add them to our mailing list. If you no longer wish to receive our mailings, please let us know and we'll remove your name from the list. Web Site Update Work continues on our web site, ephraimpottery.com. As this newsletter goes to press, we are in the process of finding a more reliable internet service provider to host our site. We also plan to improve our site's style and add content and photos. Our web site is for you, our customers, and we want to hear what you'd like to see on our site. Please email Kristin Zanetti at EFP with your comments and suggestions.
