Becky Hansen
joined Ephraim Pottery in October 2006 as a decorator in the glazing
department.
Becky was
introduced to pottery back in college when she took a ceramics course to
fulfill an art requirement. She remembers struggling to learn to center
the clay on the wheel. “It didn’t come naturally to me, “ she says. “I had
friends who were art majors, but I never thought of myself as an artist.”
But something about the process intrigued her. With her parents’
encouragement, she stuck with it, keeping at it until she “got it.”
After
graduating from college with a degree in marketing, Becky sought out
places where she could throw and work with clay on the side while working
in her family’s business. She eventually moved to Colorado, where she
found a job doing throwing demonstrations at Van Briggle Pottery in
Colorado Springs. That summer job evolved into greater involvement in
other areas at Van Briggle, including their tile division. She further
refined her technique working in her home studio and began to think of
pottery as a career.
The
collaborative and friendly work environment, along with EFP’s reputation
for quality work, drew Becky to EFP. She enjoys the variety she has in her
job and the expanded possibilities to work with clay. She has been
surprised at just how much the artists at EFP are allowed to experiment.
“Everyone is always creating something new,” she notes. Attending the
Grove Park Inn show in February 2007 really brought home to her how much
EFP’s collectors appreciate new work. “When we finished putting the
experimentals out for the next day, everyone stood back and applauded,”
she marveled. “It was amazing!” |
