Down on the Farm
Potters to the Stars?!
-Kristin Zanetti
I am an enthusiastic subscriber to Architectural
Digest, eagerly awaiting the arrival of each new issue. Leafing through the crisp
pages, I imagine what it would be like to live in those grand homes that will always be
just fantasies to most of us.
Candice Bergen smiled at me from the
cover of the October issue, which arrived in a recent mornings mail delivery. I
flipped through quickly, pausing when I reached the feature on Ms. Bergens home. As
my next page-turn revealed a photo of her living room, I stopped short in amazement. What
was that green vase sitting on her mantel? Could it be
.?
"Take a look at this!" I said
to Kevin and Scott, showing them the photo. "Thats our Sage Vase!" they
exclaimed. We were very proud to see one of our vases in the pages of AD, and in
one of those dream homes of the stars, to boot.
 |
| EFPs Sage Vase
(#715) is available for $284 plus $15 shipping and handling. It comes in Leaf Green with
Satin Yellow buds. |
| Did you know? Pieces shown in previous catalogs, if not
discontinued or retired, can still be ordered. A complete set of previous catalogs with
price lists and a list of discontinued and retired pieces is available for $5 post-paid. |
Hot Out of the Kiln
We are excited to introduce our newest glaze, Curdled
Satin Yellow (CSY). Scott has spent several months developing and testing this glaze,
which is very similar to the yellow glaze used by Grueby Pottery 100 years ago. CSY is now
available on all of the vases offered in our original Curdled Leaf Green glaze. Yellow pottery looks great when grouped with green pieces, and
single pieces well placed can really brighten up a room.
Pitchin Shoes
| Kevin's horseshoe
team finished in second place at the end of an exciting season. They made it to the
finals, only to suffer a disappointing loss in the league championship. Kevin won two
games, but in the end it wasn't enough to pull out a team win. |

|
Congratulations to Kevin and
his team
on another great season of pitchin' shoes! |
Collectors Corner
Each Ephraim Pottery vase and
candlestick is a limited edition piece. On August 31, EFP retired 7 designs. No more of
these hand-thrown, hand-decorated pieces will ever be created. The pieces that were
retired, and the number of each that were created, are:
#702 Spring Pear Vase [14*]
#703 Lily of the Valley Vase [61*]
#705 Raindrop Leaf Vase [28*]
#720 Chamberstick [83*]
#730 Prairie Flower Bowl [28*]
#734 Cattail Vase [44*]
#815 Curdled Cottage Vase [17*]
* Unofficial count as of 9/8/99
Because relatively few pieces of each
design were created, we expect that collectors who own these pieces will see them increase
in value over the years. Those familiar with antique Arts and Crafts pottery are well
aware of how prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Who knows? Maybe one of your
great-grandchildren will take your collection of Ephraim Faience Pottery to Antiques
Road Show in 2099 and find out that he or she is rich beyond their wildest dreams! In
the meantime, enjoy your pottery.
We plan to retire another group of
pottery in December or January. The full details will be announced on our web site and in
the next issue of News From Ephraim. Stay tuned!
| What is faience? Faience is a term whose meaning has changed over time.
Originally, faience referred to tin-glazed earthenware produced in Faenza, Italy.
Over time, as decorative styles and glazes changed, faience came to refer to
earthenware pieces with or without sculpted decoration, and finished in either matte
and/or shiny glazes. Faience is also used to refer to tin-glazed ceramics from
ancient Egypt, Asia, and Europe. |
The Holidays Are Here!
 |
Well, almost. While it might
seem early to be thinking about holiday shopping, we wanted to remind you that it takes 4
to 6 weeks to individually hand-create the pottery you order from us. Please place your
order by November 15 to ensure delivery before December 24. We try to keep some
"extra" pottery on the shelves before the holidays, so if you find yourself
searching for a gift in December, give us a call and we'll let you know what we have
available. |
<
| Our shows and
sales are also great places to get a jump on your holiday shopping. Check out the Fall Calendar in this issue for a complete schedule of events. |
| A note on returns Because each piece of our pottery is a hand-made work of art,
slight variations in color, size, and decoration will naturally occur. We carefully
inspect each piece for physical defects before it leaves our studio. If you believe a
piece you ordered has an undetected defect or was damaged during shipping, please notify
us within 2 weeks of receiving the item to request authorization to return it. If you have
any questions about a piece, please contact us before you order. We will be happy to
provide you with more information. |
Fall Calendar

|
After a very busy summer,
EFP is gearing up for an action-packed fall. We were just at Craftsman Farms Living
the Arts & Crafts Lifestyle IV, where we participated in the Craft Fair. A lucky
bidder at the Farms benefit gala and auction purchased our donation, a retired
Raindrop Leaf Vase in our newest glaze, Curdled Satin Yellow. |
| Even if
you werent able to make it to Craftsman Farms or to our summer shows, there are
still plenty of opportunities to come to a show or sale this fall. We will be
participating in events in California, Colorado, and Wisconsin. Hopefully you will be able
to come out and meet us, and pick up some great pottery, too! Here's where you can find us in October and
November. |

Looking for a
Bargain?
Pottery-making isnt an exact
science. EFP has some great pottery that we consider "second quality." These
pieces may have a crack in the foot, a glaze miss, or a color or variation different from
what is shown in our catalog. Because our standards are high, we dont send these
pieces out for orders. This leaves us with the problem of what to do with our seconds. Our
solution? The First Annual Ephraim Pottery Seconds Sale!
On November 13-14, we are inviting
our customers to come to Dovetail Antiques in downtown Deerfield, WI. You will be able to
pick up some beautiful seconds at 15%-50% off regular retail prices. This will be a great
opportunity to do some holiday shopping for the pottery lovers on your gift list (and for
yourself, too!).
Dovetail
Antiques is located at 119
S. Main St. From I-94, take the Hwy 73 exit south 4 miles to Deerfield. For more
information, contact Kristin at EFP

Down on the Farm
- Kristin Zanetti
Reflections on a Year |
 |
Nearly a year has passed
since I came to the farm. Having experienced the waxing and waning of each of the four
seasons, I intuitively sense the completion of a cycle. The arrival of autumn, with its
shortening days and chilly air, lends itself naturally to quiet contemplation. After
reflecting on my experience in farm country, I thought I would share some particularly
special memories with you. |
- Driving under a stand of russet-colored
oaks and watching the leaves dance wildly in the updrafts.
- Listening to the eerily primitive calls of
a flock of sandhill cranes in the darkness on a cold, crisp evening.
- Sitting on the doorstep on a clear day in
early spring, feeling the warm breeze on my face and hearing nothing but the sound of the
wind in the grasses.
- Watching swirling black-green clouds form
a tornado and move across the fields and away from the farm.
Here's to another year of experiencing
life with an artist's eye and a poet's soul. Let the new cycle begin. |
